Deadline FAQs

What happens if I miss the April 15 deadline?

If you owe tax, penalties and interest generally start to build from the due date. The failure-to-file penalty is usually larger than the failure-to-pay penalty, so file or extend on time even if you can’t pay in full.

Does an extension give me more time to pay?

No. Federal and Virginia extensions give you more time to file, not to pay. Pay what you expect to owe by the original due date.
